BDSM – Virtual Reality For the Alternative Lifestyle

A definitive VR future for Alternate Lifestyles

Life is quite a struggle if you have interests that do not really match the crowd. Living an alternative lifestyle isn't just difficult it is almost always blocked as everyone seems to be judging your preferences. Times are a changing, and the internet revolution has made it a bit easier for you to explore like-minded environments. But we are still far from living in an ideal world. The rainbow revolution has brought a lot of things into the mainstream. However life for BDSM enthusiasts is still confined to a large extent. The internet revolution just over 15 years ago coupled with a changing cultural and arts scene made it simpler for the members of the LGBTQ community. The same change is waiting to happen for the BDSM community given the VR / Augmented reality revolution.

Challenges and Hurdles

The challenge in the BDSM community is a bit larger than just getting to identify people of one’s own interest. It extends to the creation of the scene one enjoys and of getting the vast array of products used and enjoyed at the dungeon. The creativity of building a scene is almost half the excitement when it comes to the BDSM lifestyle. However, it is this scene that most negative biases exist in the society.

Whenever a new media technology takes shape someone or the other starts wondering, what will the sex industry do with this? The truth is that no visual technology is so perfectly suited to fulfilling sexual applications as VR is. VR changes the game as it erases the frame visual technologies were bound by. The possibilities are endless and possibly just a few years of R&D and refinement away.

The revolution has already started:

Large players in the adult entertainment industry started moving into the VR space as far back as 2015, Today Kink entered virtual reality through the site Companies like Naughty America have also started producing content along with individual suppliers like Ella Darling. There are a wholehost of sites today claiming to be pioneers in this space and also claiming to be creating the best content. For a glimpse of what is on offer, you can visit any of the numerous sites including – this is to name but a few.

The industry is moving so fast that a new line of reporting has started off that focuses on this space only. You will be able to read reviews and get a r ating of these adult-oriented BDSM themed games on www.thevirtualsexreview.com or www.uploadvr.com These companies are analyzing and reporting on the development within the VR space that is targeted towards the adult user. The industry is so dynamic that while researching about the available content I stumbled over an article titled “How to Hide Your Porn on Gear VR”. This goes on to tell me that space is thriving and ready for some really big moves in times to come.

What the future holds:

Industry leaders like Natacha Merritt have been quoted as saying - “In VR we are safe to explore new sexual fantasies, It allows you to explore things you might not feel comfortable exploring in reality.” Clearly stating the direction of thing, and how people with alternative interest will actually drive the next wave of innovation and adoption in terms of VR and its possibilities.

Here is the big dampener - we’re not going to put on full-body haptic suits, climb into gyroscopes and transform ourselves into shimmering posthuman forms that overcome our bodily shackles and merge with one another in a transcendent liquid singularity in a hurry. The main reason VR has finally made way into our lives is thanks to its small footprint. A million-dollar suit will not excite many people and will certainly not help take BDSM mainstream.

There is Hope

I am not disputing that the libidinally aspirational can today go to the market and pick up omnidirectional treadmills and mo-cap harnesses to facilitate his/her BDSM fantasies. The ground reality today is that a Japanese sex-toy c ompany called “Tenga” has even helped design a complicated prototype that syncs a virtual sex simulator with… well, this you have to imagine this one yourself. But for the foreseeable future, VR will be aural and visual only; if localized tactile feedback is what you’re after, you most probably will have to handle hat yourself.

The truth of the matter is that we are also not going to lose ourselves in a panoply of CGI flesh calibrated to our every kink and whim either. The world is trying to achieve this possibility: the past two years of VR game development a re full of or in other words littered with the husks of abandoned projects with names like Sinful Robot. The problem is, as learned by the developers of these games themselves, creating a fluid 360-degree video-game is a difficult task in itself as is – and making it stereoscopic and photo-realistic complicates things exponentially.

... But Still A long way to go

Let me state this clearly - majority of VR-capable ‘adult games’ are Second Life–like knockoffs with graphics that look like waxy blow-up dolls. There is little realism and a long way to go in terms of bringing a visual stimulation for the scene we talked out in the start. While a VR version of phone or FaceTime sex isn’t tenable yet – even if you could see each other, you’d have headsets on. The most promising avenue appears to be 360-degree 3D video, like the kind some people are using to produce VR concert experiences, or the projects showcased at Sundance’s New Frontier program in January 2015.

The enthusiast will have to wait a long time before a full body suit with tactile feedback can be programmed to give you a predesigned dominant or submissive experience. The currently available feature list is not large enough, but the big gain is that we already have a host of people dreaming up new fantasies for future development. So, it is an open secret that in times to come we will get a world where I can build an experience of my choice for either just myself or me and my partner. Switch rolls feel the type of clothing you want or the touch of adult toys without having to invest in each one of them is still a bit of a fantasy, but the work is on…. Dream on is what I say.
